North Shore Mindfulness was started by an Order of Interbeing (OI) member in the late 1990s. The Sangha has always been led by volunteers, following the practices of the Zen Buddhist teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh. The Sangha initially practiced at a North Vancouver library and eventually moved to North Shore Neighbourhood House in 2009.
When Thich Nhat Hanh visited Vancouver in 2011, a number of people who had attended his retreat were inspired to come together and continue their practice with the North Shore Mindfulness Sangha. In 2012 to 2019 our sangha was practicing at St. Stephen’s Church in West Vancouver with Janice and Bob Walker, Ordained OI members, leading the Care Taking committee. When the Walkers moved to Victoria, BC in September 2017, a new Care Taking committee was formed.
In September 2019, our Sangha moved to the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre. With Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings as our guide, we continue to practice with enthusiasm today and into the future.
